The Pokemon TCG has seen numerous art styles emerge for its rarest cards over the years. From the introduction of full art cards over a decade ago in the Black and White series to the release of jaw-dropping illustration rares in Scarlet and Violet, the constant evolution of Pokemon cards from set to set is what keeps collectors coming back for more. Today, we’re putting the spotlight on the Rainbow Rare, one of the more unique art variations in recent history.
Why Collect Rainbow Rare Cards?
Rainbow Rares made their debut in the Sun and Moon series, and became an instant phenomenon in the collecting world. These cards were among the rarest in the game at the time, which made them as scarce as they are visually unique. Their artwork is unlike anything which came before them, and has undeniable aesthetic appeal; their shimmering holographic patterns contrast excellently with their sleek and simplistic design. Additionally, Rainbow Rare cards often featured powerful Pokemon GX or Trainer cards which were frequently included in competitive decks, making them just as valuable to players as they are to collectors.
Rainbow Rares also hold significant investment potential for those looking to the future. Their value has increased over time, and is likely to continue doing so now that they have been discontinued in Scarlet and Violet. As the Sword and Shield sets lapse out of print, mint-condition Rainbow cards will become even more elusive–making them an even bigger draw!
Top Rainbow Pokemon Cards
Several Rainbow Rare cards have stood the test of time, emerging as some of the most sought after cards from their entire series. Here are some of the highlights:
Charizard GX from Sun & Moon: Burning Shadows: First on our list is Rainbow Charizard GX, a card that needs no introduction. Its breathtaking artwork depicts one of the franchise’s most iconic Pokemon in a majestic pose, engulfed by flames. This card quickly established itself as the crown jewel of Rainbow Rares, and is currently worth upwards of $2,000 in mint condition!
Eevee & Snorlax GX from Sun & Moon: Team Up Eevee & Snorlax GX was one of the first Tag Team Pokemon to see a Rainbow Rare, featuring a team of two fan favorite Pokemon! When it was first released, this card made waves in the TCG and was featured in many decks in the subsequent Regional level tournaments. Now that it is no longer legal for play, the card has found a home as a gem for collectors.
Lugia GX from Sun & Moon: Lost Thunder Our list wouldn’t be complete without a legendary card, and Rainbow Lugia GX from Lost Thunder sits on top. The Pokemon’s elegance and majesty shine through in its artwork, making it by far the most valuable card to come out of Lost Thunder. A PSA 10 copy recently sold for $500! (Note: Of all the Pokemon on our list, Lugia is the only one that isn’t from the first generation!)
Pikachu VMAX from Sword & Shield No exploration of iconic Rainbow cards would be complete without mentioning Pikachu VMAX. As the franchise's mascot, Pikachu is almost universal in its appeal–and this card is no exception. Like the previously mentioned Eevee & Snorlax GX, this Pikachu also brought an all-new mechanic to the game as it was one of the first VMAX Pokemon ever printed.
Each of these Rainbow cards has cemented itself as a treasure in the Pokemon world. They have become markers of Pokemon history, instantly recognizable to collectors alongside some of the game’s most sought after cards. Rainbow Rares highlight the innovation in the Pokemon TCG, uniting its deeply nostalgic roots with modern card design and newer generations of Pokemon.
