10. Mega Charizard X ex - $5.01
Set: Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames
Card Number: 013/094
Rarity: Double Rare
Our first, but not our last, Mega Charizard X ex. This is the standard Double Rare, with takuyoa's blue-flamed Charizard breathing fire through hot pink and green streaks. It's the one you'll actually pull in a normal pack, and having Charizard in the name is enough to keep it in the top 10.
9. Piplup - $11.88
Set: Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames
Card Number: 098/094
Rarity: Illustration Rare
This is a pretty chill Piplup (no pun intended). It's sitting in a snow cave overlooking a frozen lake, with little yellow flowers poking up through the snow. Piplup is one of the most popular starters from Diamond and Pearl, so it's no surprise it holds a spot here. It's also Dawn's partner in the anime, and you'll see Dawn show up at #4.
8. Meowth - $12.16
Set: Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames
Card Number: 106/094
Rarity: Illustration Rare
Meowth is stretched out on a tree branch in front of a little town, painted in a loose watercolor style that feels like early Pokémon art. The gold coin on its forehead is the one bright spot in the whole scene. It's a quiet, throwback kind of card, and I love that about it.
7. Mega Lopunny ex - $12.76
Set: Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames
Card Number: 128/094
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Mega Lopunny debuted back in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, so it's fun to see it return in a Mega Evolution era set. Kinu Nishimura has it mid-kick with orange and magenta slashes cutting across the card and glowing lights behind it. It looks like a still from a fighting game, in a good way.
6. Rotom ex - $13.03
Set: Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames
Card Number: 126/094
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Rotom picked up all of its appliance forms back in Pokémon Platinum, and this card puts several of them on one teal circuit-board background with lightning bolts flying everywhere. It fits the Multi Adapter Ability, which lets Rotom carry extra Pokémon Tools, and the whole thing looks like pop art.
5. Mega Sharpedo ex - $16.64
Set: Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames
Card Number: 127/094
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Another Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Mega, and this one has the most action of the bunch. nagimiso has Mega Sharpedo bursting out of the waves with its jaws open, the sun glowing behind it and spray flying everywhere. Sharpedo already looked mean, and the Mega version leans all the way into it.
4. Dawn - $18.69
Set: Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames
Card Number: 129/094
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Dawn walks her bike down a trail through a mountain valley with wildflowers everywhere, which is a great lifestyle shot. Atsushi Furusawa makes it feel like the start of a long trip. It's the only Trainer card on the list, and her partner from the anime, Piplup, is back at #9.
3. Mega Charizard X ex - $20.36
Set: Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames
Card Number: 109/094
Rarity: Ultra Rare
Now we're getting into the Charizard portion of the list, and it's a big one. takuyoa went full neon on the Ultra Rare, with hot pink and green flames, a gold outline around Charizard X, and a pink Charizard silhouette in the background. It looks nothing like the gold version at #2, even though the same artist drew both.
2. Mega Charizard X ex - $215.07
Set: Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames
Card Number: 130/094
Rarity: Mega Hyper Rare
The Mega Hyper Rare is takuyoa's gold version of Mega Charizard X ex, with the whole card in etched, shimmering line work. It sits far above everything below it on the list, but the painted SIR still sells for roughly three times what it does. Collectors clearly prefer the artwork over the shine here.
1. Mega Charizard X ex - $660.86
Set: Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames
Card Number: 125/094
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Mega Charizard X ex is the undisputed top pull in Phantasmal Flames, and it isn't close. danciao has the Mega form mid-roar in swirling blue flames, with Charmander, Charmeleon, and Charizard in orange down below. Seeing the whole evolution line on one card is what makes this one so much more than just another Mega Charizard.
Final Thoughts
Phantasmal Flames came by its name honestly, with blue flames and Charizard all over the top of the list. Four Mega Charizard X ex cards in the top 10 shows how much one Pokémon can carry a set, but cozy cards like Piplup, Meowth, and Dawn keep things interesting underneath. It'll be fun to see how the later Mega chase cards of this era stack up against it.
