10. The Arkenstone (Showcase) (Surge Foil) - $92.74

The Arkenstone (Showcase) (Surge Foil) from The Hobbit MTG

In the book, Bilbo calls the Arkenstone the heart of Thorin. This is the Showcase frame, with dragon scales curling around the border and the stone glowing over a pile of coins. The Adventure, Seek the Heart, tutors a legendary creature, and then the artifact gives your team +1/+1 and draws you a card every end step.

9. Gollum, Riddle Master (Borderless) (Surge Foil) - $106.89

Gollum, Riddle Master (Borderless) (Surge Foil) from The Hobbit MTG

Riddles in the Dark is chapter five of the book, and Bilbo wins it by asking what he has in his pocket. This Gollum makes you pick odd or even, then rewards you every time an opponent casts a spell of that kind: a counter, a drain, or a card. It's a multiplayer card, since somebody at the table is always casting something. The Book Cover treatment looks like a 75-cent paperback.

8. Thorin, Mountain-king (Borderless) (Surge Foil) - $125.42

Thorin, Mountain-king (Borderless) (Surge Foil) from The Hobbit MTG

Thorin Oakenshield leads the company to the Lonely Mountain, and in the book he dies at the Battle of the Five Armies after making peace with Bilbo. This card is for Equipment decks. When Thorin enters, you attach your Equipment to a creature, and that creature deals damage equal to its power to up to one other creature.

7. Bard, King of Dale (Borderless) (Surge Foil) - $128.67

Bard, King of Dale (Borderless) (Surge Foil) from The Hobbit MTG

Bard the Bowman kills Smaug with his last black arrow, after a thrush tells him about the bare patch in the dragon's left breast. That's the bird on his shoulder here. The card doubles your tokens and draws two cards instead of any extra draws, so Treasure and token decks love it.

6. The Queen of Dale (Showcase) (Surge Foil) - $129.82

The Queen of Dale (Showcase) (Surge Foil) from The Hobbit MTG

After Smaug dies in the book, Dale is rebuilt and Bard becomes its king, so somebody has to run the treasury. The art shows exactly that, with a queen at a ledger passing off a bag of coin. Whenever an opponent casts their first noncreature spell each turn, you recruit. It shines in multiplayer, where there are plenty of spells to punish.

5. The Arkenstone (Borderless) (Surge Foil) - $175.33

The Arkenstone (Borderless) (Surge Foil) from The Hobbit MTG

Now we're getting into the real chase cards for The Hobbit. This is the same card as #10 in the Book Cover treatment, and it sells for nearly twice as much. In the book, Bilbo pockets the Arkenstone from the hoard and later hands it to Bard to trade for peace. The paperback cover shows an old, bearded figure holding up the glowing stone.

4. Gandalf, Goblins' Bane (Borderless) (Surge Foil) - $180.22

Gandalf, Goblins' Bane (Borderless) (Surge Foil) from The Hobbit MTG

The goblins in the Misty Mountains have their own names for the swords the company carries: Beater for Gandalf's Glamdring and Biter for Orcrist. This Gandalf is for spells decks. Every noncreature spell gives him +1/+1 and pings each opponent, and the Flameshape Adventure lets you play two exiled cards if you control a Wizard. The art is a burst of fireworks.

3. Smaug the Magnificent (Showcase) (Surge Foil) - $236.31

Smaug the Magnificent (Showcase) (Surge Foil) from The Hobbit MTG

Smaug is the reason the whole quest exists. In Magic he's a mono-red commander built around Treasure: he makes one every upkeep, and whenever he attacks he deals damage equal to the Treasures you control to any target. The Showcase frame wraps dragon scales around the entire card.

2. Gleaming Splendor (Borderless) (Surge Foil) - $462.87

Gleaming Splendor (Borderless) (Surge Foil) from The Hobbit MTG

Bilbo steals a golden cup from Smaug's hoard in the book, and the dragon knows his treasure well enough to notice it's gone. Gleaming Splendor is the enchantment version of that hoard. Whenever an opponent draws their second card each turn you make a Treasure, and for three mana two players draw a card. It's a Commander card, and the Book Cover version is the second most valuable in the set.

1. Smaug the Magnificent (Borderless) - $24,500.00

Smaug the Magnificent (Borderless) Gleaming Gold Headliner from The Hobbit MTG

Smaug takes the Lonely Mountain from the dwarves long before the book starts, and the whole adventure is about taking it back. This is the Gleaming Gold Headliner, a gold foil card with classic illustrated artwork, and it's a Collector Booster exclusive with only about 500 copies out there. It's the undisputed top card in The Hobbit, and it isn't close.

Final Thoughts

This list is Tolkien's cast in order of how much collectors want them. One gold Smaug sits far above everything else, and below it Bilbo's cup, Bard's arrow, and the Arkenstone all show up in Book Cover and Showcase versions. Commander players get Smaug, Bard, and the Queen of Dale to build around, and prices on cards this thin can swing fast.

FAQ

What are the best cards in The Hobbit MTG set?

The most valuable cards are the Gleaming Gold Smaug the Magnificent, Gleaming Splendor, and the Showcase Smaug the Magnificent. Gandalf, Goblins' Bane and The Arkenstone round out the top five, and six of the ten are Book Cover versions.

What is the Gleaming Gold Smaug in The Hobbit MTG?

It's a Headliner version of Smaug the Magnificent with a gold foil finish and classic illustrated artwork. It's exclusive to Collector Boosters, and only about 500 copies exist, which is why it dwarfs every other card in the set.

What is the Book Cover treatment in The Hobbit?

Book Cover is a borderless treatment that makes a card look like a vintage paperback with a J.R.R. Tolkien banner. It covers ten cards, eight characters plus The Lonely Mountain and The Arkenstone, so it's a small and collectible group.

When did The Hobbit MTG set come out?

The Hobbit released on August 14, 2026, after prerelease events from August 7 to August 13. It arrived on MTG Arena on August 11, and its set code is HOB. It's a Universes Beyond set.

Is Smaug the Magnificent good in Commander?

Yes, if you like Treasure decks. Smaug makes a Treasure every upkeep and deals damage equal to your Treasures whenever he attacks, so he works as a mono-red commander for burn, Treasure, and dragon decks.
