#20. Mega Latias ex - $73.47

Set: Mega Evolution Base
Card Number: #181/132
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: AKIRA EGAWA
AKIRA EGAWA puts Latias in a full-speed bank, reds and blues and golds flying in every direction behind her. The whole card feels like it's still moving after you set it down. Latias is beloved but she doesn't have the pull of a starter or a Lucario, which is the only reason this is sitting just under $75.
#19. Mega Meganium ex - $95.86

Set: Ascended Heroes
Card Number: #272/217
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: Tika Matsuno
Pinks, yellows, greens everywhere, Meganium right in the middle of it looking like she's having the best day of her life. A Johto starter Mega getting art this good, just under $100, is not something you take for granted.
#18. Fezandipiti ex - $101.29

Set: Ascended Heroes
Card Number: #288/217
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: SIE NANAHARA
Fezandipiti perched in cherry blossoms, the whole card in pinks and creams with just enough dark in the wings to keep it from being too soft. A Gen 9 Pokémon that's only a couple years old, and it's already clearing $100. The art is doing most of the work here.
#17. Mega Venusaur ex - $120.47

Set: Mega Evolution Base
Card Number: #177/132
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: mashu
Hot pink, red, cyan, yellow: the background is everything happening at once, and Venusaur is just planted right in the middle of it. Flower out, teeth showing, completely unbothered, and just one piece of a connecting artwork. Just over $120, and Venusaur's collector base will find this one regardless of what else is in the set.
#16. Mega Feraligatr ex - $143.86

Set: Ascended Heroes
Card Number: #274/217
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: Souichirou Gunjima
In this card, Feraligatr takes a wide open stance, jaws out, the whole card pushing toward you in teal, orange, and green. The attack is called Mortal Crunch, and it came by that name honestly. Just under $145, and Feraligatr's fanbase punches above his market rank every time.
#15. N's Zoroark ex - $149.27

Set: Ascended Heroes
Card Number: #286/217
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: Raita Kazama
The N's Zoroark ex SIR is dense all the way through, linework and texture everywhere you look. Night Joker lets you copy any attack from a Benched N's Pokémon, which is a fun build to chase. The N's Pokémon line from Journey Together to now is a whole collector side quest, and this SIR is the crown jewel of it.
#14. Mega Lucario ex - $153.15

Set: Mega Evolution Base
Card Number: #179/132
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: Atsushi Furusawa
Lucario flies mid-swing, speed lines everywhere, towards a massive Venusaur in the background like this is a scene out of a movie. This card shows off the top battle in a battle royale of Pokémon battling below. It's just over $150 for the SIR version, and Lucario's mix of Gen 4 nostalgia and competitive history keeps both prints, one of which we'll see later, moving.
#13. Mega Gardevoir ex - $169.18

Set: Mega Evolution Base
Card Number: #178/132
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: Raita Kazama
Raita Kazama puts Gardevoir in this quiet botanical setting, flowers and vines and stars, the whole card in teals, pink, and white. It goes calm where most SIRs go loud, and that's exactly what makes it stand out. Overflowing Wishes loads Psychic Energy to every Benched Pokémon, which Gardevoir players have been building around. Just under $170, and that collector base doesn't give up ground.
#12. Lillie's Clefairy ex - $197.55

Set: Ascended Heroes
Card Number: #280/217
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: Naoki Saito
Naoki Saito draws Lillie hugging her Clefairy in a bright summer field, petals falling, ocean in the background. Just a perfect afternoon on a card. Just under $200 makes this one of the the highest-value trainer's Pokémon cards in the era, but it's not the top. Lillie's been carrying premiums since Sun & Moon, and a Saito SIR with her front and center moves the moment people see it.
#11. Mega Gardevoir ex - $220.70

Set: Mega Evolution Base
Card Number: #187/132
Rarity: Mega Hyper Rare
Illustrator: 5ban Graphics
Our first Mega Hyper Rare on the list. Mega Hyper Rares have been slightly divisive amongst collectors, but seeing as this is just the first of five on this list, the scarcity and thrill of the chase speak volumes. The MHR version sits about $50 more than the Gardevoir SIR at #13.
#10. Mega Lucario ex - $277.33

Set: Mega Evolution Base
Card Number: #188/132
Rarity: Mega Hyper Rare
Illustrator: 5ban Graphics
Another Mega Hyper Rare, and also the top card in Mega Evolution Base, this gold Mega Lucario still brings a fierce fighting energy to a flashy and borderline luxury card art. At just under $280, this MHR outranks the Gardevoir by nearly $60!
#9. Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex - $299.61

Set: Ascended Heroes
Card Number: #281/217
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: Mitsuhiro Arita
Arita shines again illustrating a Kanto Pokémon, this time being Mewtwo. Giovanni stands in the foreground, Mewtwo looming in blue and grey over him. Interestingly enough, even though this card is the top Trainer's Pokemon of the Mega era, it still falls behind the Destined Rivals version by over $175!
#8. Pikachu ex - $330.17

Set: Ascended Heroes
Card Number: #277/217
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: James Turner
James Turner, known for his Duskull line in Shrouded Fable, leans all the way into the Tera crystal angle. Pikachu covered in rainbow gems, colored sparkles all around him against a solid hot pink background. Resolute Heart lets this Pokémon survive at 10 HP if it would have been knocked out from full, which is genuinely annoying to play against.
#7. Mega Dragonite ex - $331.17

Set: Ascended Heroes
Card Number: #295/217
Rarity: Mega Hyper Rare
Illustrator: aky CG Works
Another entry in the Mega Hyper Rare category, Mega Dragonite ex really feels deserving of the treatment due to it's warmth and almost regal look. While it may not be the "king" it still shines brightly. The SIR version higher up the list runs significantly higher, which takes us back to the MHR vs SIR debate.
#6. Mega Charizard X ex - $361.29

Set: Phantasmal Flames
Card Number: #130/094
Rarity: Mega Hyper Rare
Illustrator: takuyoa
Speaking of the "king" we have our first of several Charizards towards the top of this list, and once again a very deserving entry for the MHR treatment. With his arms curled and roaring in almost an infernal rage, this card might be underrated despite its high placement on this list.
#5. Mega Charizard Y ex - $503.12

Set: Ascended Heroes
Card Number: #294/217
Rarity: Mega Hyper Rare
Illustrator: aky CG Works
There's some early debate on why the MHR Mega Charizard Y has outpaced the Mega Charizard X counterpart, and one of the strongest arguments is recency bias. This is the newest Charizard in the era, and Ascended Heroes has been difficult to obtain making this a much more difficult card for completionists, but will it last as the set cools?
#4. Pikachu ex - $506.57

Set: Ascended Heroes
Card Number: #276/217
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: boooia
Is it any surprise that such an adorable lifestyle Pikachu would make it's way this high up the list? Absolutely not. Seeing this card shine brighter than it's Tera counterpart in the same set really shows that lifestyle shots and the true classics just can't be beat.
#3. Mega Dragonite ex - $610.98

Set: Ascended Heroes
Card Number: #290/217
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: DOM
The mascot of Ascended Heroes is surrounded in pink, peach, and soft blue with a smaller Dragonite, Dragonair, and Dratini floating ghost-like in the background. Mega Dragonite settles into the scene like it just belongs there. It looks like a warm memory you didn't know you had.
#2. Mega Charizard X ex - $738.50

Set: Phantasmal Flames
Card Number: #125/094
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: danciao
The dominator of the charts in Phantasmal Flames, the Mega Charizard X ex gives us a similar setting as the Mega Dragonite ex with all of the evolution line faded into the artwork. However, this one is full of dark reds and blues. If this and our #1 card are any indicator we may have a huge new fan-favorite artist in danciao, since they illustrated both!
#1. Mega Gengar ex - $1,017.89

Set: Ascended Heroes
Card Number: #284/217
Rarity: Special Illustration Rare
Illustrator: danciao
A thousand dollar ghost. danciao puts Mega Gengar in the center of a full psychedelic color explosion: yellow fire on the left, purples and greens on the right, Gengar grinning wide in deep purple and black. This card just broke the $1,000 mark and is now in pursuit of catching the Sunbreon from Prismatic. Who would've guessed that the top chase card of the era wouldn't even be one of the set mascots?
Final Thoughts
The Mega Evolution era is three sets deep and already producing $1,000 pulls. Ascended Heroes took everything Mega Evolution Base and Phantasmal Flames built and pushed it further: more Pokémon, bigger hit slots, and a Mega Gengar SIR that immediately became the most valuable card in the era. More sets are coming, which means this top 20 will keep shifting especially with Perfect Order and Chaos Rising on the way!
